Prop settings on Canon mirrorless

So I’m renting a Canon R6 MkII and was wondering what the best settings are for shooting prop planes and helicopters. I’m mainly concerned with the different shutter modes. Am I correct in presuming that mechanical shutter is best no matter what, but you lose frames per second?

@skippyscage @roelreijne - any thoughts?

Electronic first curtain prevents rolling shutter. Rolling shutter isn’t an issue if you blur the props.

Roger,

You should start from 1/50 and work your way down…1/30, 1/15 and so on…

Just kidding, rolling shutter will be more visible on longer shutter speed like 1/200-1/500…
just look at the Rob Holland FOUR blade propeller shot a 1/500sec with Canon R5

lol, this plane never had four blade prop…it always had three

Ah alright, so rolling shutter isn’t that big of a problem with the higher end cameras.

I think I got two things mixed up. I guess I took this post the wrong way and he’s talking about the internal camera shake from the IS system blurring shots.

Yes it’s all about the speed of the sensor and how fast it functions. The best video that explains that is this one.

In there he also shows a comparison of sensors in different cameras in relation to the speed of the sensor.

I’ve had people call me a liar about the R7 and how bad it is. I guess they can’t handle the truth or are unable to see the issues.

Thanks for the video. So it’s the read out speed of the sensor that is the bottle neck. Would be cool to reach the point where it’s (almost) instant.

I found this chart with read out speeds here. Interesting stuff and a whole new world opens up to me… .

only one camera in production has absolutely zero issue - the Sony A9iii which has a worlds first Global Shutter - the rest are catching up

Seems it’s the new holy grail. Wonder what will be the next. Hope they can get rid of ISO and just have really good light sensitivity.

Anyway, thanks for the info!

Well rented some Canon gear and I’m impressed. First day out so still getting the hang of it. The 6R MkII + 200-800 is a really nice combo.
