Another interesting blog post, Steven. What it all comes down to is practice, and hanging out at an air flied with lots of traffic is perfect for that. I would also add to switch vantage points. Try different angles, shooting from different locations.
I do think we have a different definition of “spotting” though. I always have to tell people “I’m not a spotter”, meaning “someone who writes down the registration numbers of the planes they have seen”. Maybe it’s different in the US. I prefer to call it “Fence Checking” 
- which reminds me I have to get out and smell some burnt kerosene again…
And thanks for sharing this post, I love seeing people getting back to blogging on their own website again. That’s what the internet should be all about (insert “old man yells at cloud” meme)
