Meiringen Air Base - Switzerland

My only visit to Meiringen Air Base was in the summer of 2013. So no snowy mountains, but also no jet noise in those mountains. That’s because the base is closed for jet flying in the summer to appease the tourists (not this tourist).

They do have public tours every other week though, showing all facets of the base. From maintenance to security, jet operation to parachute rigging and air traffic control. All is shown and explained. Very cool to witness and learn about what goes on at this unique base with it’s underground hanger, road across the runway and excellent restaurant.

I’ll share some images from this visit here, as the quality isn’t up to par for a photo report on the site. More to follow soon.

A Super Puma was flying while we were visiting the maintenance hangar.

A Pilatus PC-6/B2 was flying paratroopers throughout the morning.

An F-5E with Patrouille Suisse scheme was under maintenance.

Another PC-6 was tucked away in the maintenance hangar.

Meiringen is on my to do list. I would love to visit. I had no idea the base was closed during summer though.
