Gear - Canon

I just picked up the R5II. So far it’s a great body and I’m luvin it.
I still need to put the electronic shutter to the test to see if the new stacked sensor prevents rolling shutter artifacts. Haven’t seen any RS problems so far.
(Can’t use electronic shutter mode on my R7 because the rolling shutter is do bad).

I’ve found zero rolling shutter issues so far, even shooting down to 1/60th and panning with verticals in the background. I’m using electronic shutter exclusively now after the car-crash that was the R7.

Is it that bad with the R7? (Yeah I’m looking at gear again)

Yes it’s terrible, Canon rushed it out.

You have to use 1st curtain electronic as it has bad rolling shutter as the sensor is slow.

It also suffers from shutter shock - the IBIS is shaken by the mechanical shutter and you can’t even turn IBIS off.

DSLR days I was getting maybe low 90s % keeper rate. D7 it was more like maybe 50%. It’s like I didn’t know how to shoot or something. Even static shooting. One shot looks in focus but then compare it with a 2nd and it’s slightly fuzzy.

Props at 1/160th? Forget that, very low keepers. 1/200th seems to work the best.

I’ve had the R5ii since release and I’m back to high 90s % keepers and electronic shutter is good as the sensor is stacked and fast.

Basically avoid the R7 at all costs. I’ve suffered this camera for 2 years and glad I don’t need to anymore.

Other bodies are also fine I think, but I have zero real world experience with any others in the line.

Ooof, I might need to change my rental reservation then

What about the R6 MkII?

Definitely try something else. I don’t know what else except what I have.

R7 is almost useless for aircraft.
Rolling shutter forces you into a shutter mode. Then shutter shock becomes an issue.

I’ve shot with the R5 since it launched and my kids both have the R6, been happy with all of them although the Mkii versions of each definitely seem like improvements. I’m interested in the pre-shoot feature of the R5ii for animal photography but wish it could be customized rather than always being half a second.

Steep prices (and the ‘necessity’ to get new glass as well, when transferring to mirrorless) made me decide to stick to my 7D II for some time.
In addition, I still have LR6 (one of the final editions on CD, without having to subscribe). Getting new gear would also mean getting a LR subscription - or transferring to one of the alternatives available (which would make an interesting topic I guess?).

The 7DII is awesome. I still have mine.
I like it better than my R7.

Leonard, I’m not in a hurry to upgrade from DSLRs either. But I strongly encourage you to bite the, er, memory card and get an LR subscription. The improvements since LR 6.14 are massive and worth a small monthly sacrifice. Some of them, like improved NR, subject/background selection, and AI-based fill/replacement, are probably more valuable than a mirrorless upgrade.

I must say, these new mirrorless systems are voodoo magic. Not that they make me a better photographer (sadly), but the technology is so much better, faster and lighter than the last generation DSLRs I used.

Ok, I haven’t really touched a camera in the last two years, so the difference is extreme for me, but man… to hold a camera with a 200-800 lens all day and not have a sore back at the end and on top of that have way more keepers (yeah, because I shot way more frames…) is amazing.
